The story of “INTERNET”.

Are you a heavy user of the internet?

How much do you know about internet?

Let’s watch a video clip before u continue reading this post.

The video above shows a brief history of Internet.

The Internet has revolutionized the computer and communications world like nothing before. According to Sterling (1993), the intriguing concept of a decentralized, blastproof, packet-switching network was kicked around by RAND, MIT and UCLA during the 60s. The National Physical Laboratory in Great Britain set up the first test network on these principles in 1968. By December 1969, there were four nodes on the infant network, which was named ARPANET. Throughout the ’70s, ARPA’s network grew. Its decentralized structure made expansion easy. As the ’70s and ’80s advanced, many very different social groups found themselves in possession of powerful computers. It was fairly easy to link these computers to the growing network-of- networks. The Internet’s pace of growth in the early 1990s is spectacular, almost ferocious. It is spreading faster than cellular phones, faster than fax machines.

In the article of Sterling as well, he said: “Why do people want to be on the Internet? One of the main reasons is simple freedom.” Yes, this is true. People like us love to spend our time on the internet and do whatever we like. Especially teenagers, internet playing an important role in their life. As for me, I used internet to do assignment, do some online shopping, online chatting with friends, watch movie online and so on. Leiner et al. (2012) mentioned that Internet is at once a world-wide broadcasting capability, a mechanism for information dissemination. Besides, it also act as a medium for collaboration and interaction between individuals and their computers without regard for geographic location.

The chart above shows that there are more than five times as many Internet users in year 2010 as there were in 2000. Pingdom (2010) revealed that “the Internet hasn’t just become larger, it’s also become more spread out, more global.”

Another chat from Pingdom website that shows the number of Internet users worldwide reached 2.27 billion in year 2012. Add on, Asia’s Internet population stand at the first place right now with the figure of 418M. As we could see, Internet population is increasing year by year. Could you imagine the total population of Internet in the next 10 years?

“It’s human nature to get used to changes, so most of us have a tendency to forget how rapidly the world has changed, and keeps changing” (Pingdom 2012).

    • Additionally, when you say “The Internet has revolutionized the computer and communications world like nothing before” because it is due to the Internet that the prescence of virtual communities are even possible. Another thing you mentioned which I found very true is the fact that the Internet allows us freedom. That is why we cannot stay away from it, as with all the laws, censorship and rules in society nowadays it is pretty hard to feel the freedom as a citizen.

  2. It is true for what Sterling said, Internet is our freedom. We are usually controlled by law and rules in reality life, but some how as soon as we start using the internet, there is no constriction to our point of view and we can basically do what ever we like. Is a good point you stated there. And the video gave a good idea of how the internet come by.
